How can I help?
Your support of the Hear and Say Centre helps to give
a gift for life…the gift to a deaf child of sound and
speech, giving them the ability to achieve their potential.
Giving
a child who is deaf or hearing impaired the ability to communicate
with clear, natural speech and language opens the
door to a life in the world of sound, to opportunities for
a full education, employment of choice, social integration with
the hearing world and the chance to contribute to their community.
Although
this is intensive and therefore expensive therapy, costing
the Centre an average of $10,000 per child per year,
the centre’s
program is provided at no cost to the family, apart from
a nominal clinical levy. Government funding provides for
20%
but the centre
must raise the remainder, over $1.4m annually through corporate
and community support and fundraising.
The Centre provides
a family-based program, with support and education for the
family unit. Children attend from diagnosis
of their deafness until school-entry age, when 92% of the
Centre’s
children enter mainstream education with their hearing peers.
The remaining 8% have additional disabilities. This is compared
to 33% in Europe.
The Hear and Say Centre was opened in July
1992 with six children and now is represented in four Centres
throughout
the state,
with over 200 children currently enrolled and a waiting list.
There
are many ways you can help either financially or in kind or
through volunteering.
Your support on an individual, community
or corporate level will be most appreciated and will help make
a difference
to a child’s
future.
It is only through the ongoing support of the
community that we have been able to change the lives
of hundreds
of deaf
and hearing impaired children and their families.
The
Centre is certified as a charity - registration number 1190.
The Centre is endorsed by the ATO as a deductible gift
recipient and an income tax exempt charitable entity.
