Transition Program

In the final term of the year, a Transition Program may be offered at the Brisbane Centre. The “Transition Class” is offered to those families whose children will be entering Year 1 of school the following year. This program takes place in October, for one hour a week over six (6) weeks, and is attended by the child and the parent/s. At these classes, the children learn and practice specific strategies to support the transition to school process.

  • School and early childhood professionals have identified key factors in children’s development and learning which are important for a smooth transition to school and success with the formal learning program. These skills and attitudes are developed across all areas of children’s development, social, emotional, cognitive and physical, and include the ability to:
  • persist with activities and to problem solve when faced with difficulties;
  • share ideas and equipment;
  • make and enjoy friends;
  • solve conflicts by non-aggressive means;
  • show concern for and help others;
  • be independent and show initiative in self help routines;
  • enjoy and participate in group experiences;
  • enjoy and engage in stories, poetry and songs;
  • initiate and participate in play;
  • cope with changes; and
  • have confidence in themselves as learners.

Parents are encouraged to visit prospective schools in the year prior to school entry, to assist in selection of the most appropriate school for their child. Parent Education Classes, as well as the child’s Auditory-Verbal Therapist, will provide information about support services available in mainstream education settings.
